Crowns and Bridges

Living with cracked, broken, or missing teeth affects everything. You cover your mouth when you smile, can’t eat certain foods, and worry about your teeth getting worse.

We understand. At Affordable Dental East in Indianapolis, Dr. Erik Lund creates custom dental crowns and bridges that protect your oral health and help you chew comfortably again. We believe everyone deserves high-quality dental work, and we aren’t satisfied with the result until we know you’re satisfied.

Dental Crowns Protect Damaged Teeth

A dental crown surrounds a tooth to protect it from further damage. After performing an exam to understand your needs, Dr. Lund might recommend a crown if you have:

  • A cavity that takes up too much of the tooth for a filling
  • A cracked or broken tooth that needs protection
  • A worn tooth from grinding or clenching
  • A discolored or poorly shaped tooth
  • A tooth that's had root canal treatment
  • A dental implant that needs a replacement tooth

Benefits of Choosing a Dental Crown or Bridge

After a thorough examination, Dr. Lund will discuss whether a crown or bridge is right for you. He will explain your options, review your budget, and make an honest recommendation so you can make a confident decision.

Restored Confidence

Restoring damaged and missing teeth means you can smile freely and eat comfortably. You don’t have to hide your smile or avoid photos, and may even notice a nice confidence boost.

Improved Function

When you don’t have to work around gaps or damaged teeth, you can chew properly and speak clearly. Bite into an apple, enjoy corn on the cob, and eat all your favorite foods comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental crowns typically last 10–15 years with proper care, though many patients get 20 years or more from their crowns. The lifespan depends on the material used, your oral hygiene habits, and how you treat your teeth.

What Affects Crown Longevity

Porcelain and ceramic crowns in Indianapolis usually last 10–15 years and look the most natural. Metal crowns, while less attractive, can last 20 years or longer because they're extremely durable.

Where the crown is located also matters. Back teeth experience more wear because they withstand greater chewing force than front teeth.

Tips to Make Your Crown Last Longer

Taking care of your crown is simple but important:

  • Brush twice daily and floss around the crown just like your natural teeth.
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or using your teeth as tools.
  • Don't grind or clench your teeth (ask about a nightguard if you do this.
  • Visit us for regular checkups so our dentist can monitor your crown.
  • Quit smoking, which weakens gums and the bone supporting your crown.

When to Replace Dental Crowns

Even with great care, crowns eventually wear out. Signs it's time for replacement include chips, cracks, a loose fit, or decay around the edges. Dr. Lund will check their condition at each dental checkup and let you know.

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth

A dental bridge fills the gap left by a missing tooth. It uses crowns on the teeth next to the gap to support a replacement tooth in the middle. Bridges are perfect if you want to replace a missing tooth but prefer not to use dental implants.

Getting Your Crown or Bridge Step by Step

Once you agree that a crown or bridge is your best option, you can expect the following steps to take place over two visits to our Indianapolis dental office:

  • Prepare the Tooth — We numb the area completely, then carefully shape the tooth to make room for your crown. For bridges, we prepare the supporting teeth on both sides of the gap.
  • Take Impressions — Our digital scanner means no messy impressions, just accurate results for a perfect fit.
  • Temporary Tooth — While a dental lab creates your final crown or bridge, we’ll place a temporary to protect the tooth.
  • Final Placement — When your restoration is ready in about two weeks, we remove the temporary and carefully fit your new crown or bridge. Dr. Lund checks the bite and makes adjustments to ensure a natural appearance and perfect fit.
