What counts as a dental emergency?
If you are experiencing any of the following, don't wait to call:
- Severe toothache or throbbing pain that won't go away
- A knocked-out or broken tooth
- A lost or damaged filling, crown, or other dental work
- Swelling in your jaw, gum, or face
- Signs of an abscess or infection
- Bleeding that won't stop
What can I do to manage pain while I wait?
A few simple steps can help while you wait to be seen. For swelling, apply a cold pack to the outside of your cheek to reduce inflammation. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can take the edge off, but they are not a substitute for treatment.
If a tooth has been knocked out, keep it moist by placing it back in the socket if you can, or storing it in a small container of milk. If a filling or crown has come loose, avoid chewing on that side and call us so we can advise you based on your specific situation.
Why shouldn't I wait it out?
Dental pain rarely resolves on its own. A toothache that feels manageable today can develop into an infection or a much bigger problem if it goes untreated. The sooner we see you, the simpler and more affordable the solution is likely to be.
