As this is a question we get a lot, we’re delighted to inform you that root canal therapy, on top of being the most effective way to relieve pain and preserve teeth that have been damaged or severely decayed, is largely pain-free itself!
What’s a Root Canal?
A root canal is a minimally invasive procedure to remove the infected “pulp” (consisting of nerves and blood vessels) from inside a severely damaged tooth. Once the pulp is removed and the cavity is cleaned, it is sealed with an antibacterial material.
Root Canals Are Basically Pain-Free?
Yes. From the time local anesthesia is applied to the gums around the damaged tooth until the pulp is removed and the tooth is sealed, most patients feel little to no pain. After a root canal, the tooth and the area surrounding it do need to heal. But this process is also hassle-free, with recovery usually only requiring about a week. At this point, the tooth is usually topped with a dental crown. Once the crown is securely in place, the tooth looks and feels completely normal.
The bottom line: Not only are root canals largely pain-free, they’re renowned for the immediate relief they provide from (often) severe pain, as well as for allowing the preservation of the tooth’s natural structure.
